So, it looks like I’m back from my blogging hiatus… The past months have been filled with unfinished prototypes (lots of them…), as always, learning stuff along the way!
Here are a few things I’ve been doing.
HTML5 & WebSockets
In October, I organized a small event for a bunch of friends, introducing game programming with HTML5 et al. I went over the various technologies and we coded up a little multi-player snake game using WebSockets (through socket.io). The source code is available, should you want to fiddle with it.
I managed to get the physics to run in another thread, and we worked out the last performance issues.
We’re readying up for a release sometime soon, but there’s still some way to go.
Fridays are for fun
We’re trying out the concept of having a day to work on something you care about, twice a month, on fridays, à la Google.
So last friday I started working on a browser-based game with two colleagues. Overall it’s been great fun, we fleshed out the basics of the game design, I started designing the look of the website and set up a django project. We even did some initial character design sketches.
Hopefully this will turn out into a fully-fledged game. I can’t wait till we get more time to work on it.
This summer I worked as the main programmer on an iPhone game called Pigeon Squadron. It’s a fun, light-hearted game involving pigeons, poop and bombing missions. If you have an iPhone / iPod touch, go grab it on the App Store.
